If you enjoy reading and writing, an education in Technical Writing can prepare you for an exciting career as a proofreader, editor, or technical writer. The job of a technical writer is to re-word documents, manuals, and other written materials to make it easier for the average person to comprehend.

The field of technical writing includes preparation of catalogs, proposals, sales promotions, assembly instructions, instruction manuals, forms, etc. Technical writing may involve rewriting design specifications, supervising chart preparation, diagramming, photography, illustration, planning, preparing, and editing technical materials. Technical subjects may require a team of technical writers that include engineers, who prepare addresses of corporate or public presentation.

Programs of study in technical writing often include courses English grammar, poetry, various technical disciplines, advanced technical skills, and documentation, among others. Depending on the goals and aspirations of the student and the particular technical writing course, graduates may receive certification, or a college degree such as an associate, bachelor, or master.

Advanced degrees allow students to focus on one area of technical communication, usually a specific field of technology or science. Technical writers are also in demand in many areas of industry as well as the medical field.

It is wise for the prospective student to carefully investigate the curriculum offered at his or her choice of schools, as some are not accredited. Choose your Technical Writing School carefully, as non-accredited schools that offer technical writing degree and programs do not carry the weight of technical writing degrees or programs from accredited schools. Many employers will not consider non-accredited certificate- or degree-holders for employment.
